I began when I moved to Galveston from Waco. My dad and I came down one weekend and never left. Where all have you worked in Galveston? At Landry’s for about 12 years, spent some time working at Fisherman’s Wharf and at one of the Lepos’ other bars, the Island Pier Club. They also own Albatross. What's new? There has been a lot of work done here, new furniture, plants and activities. We’re also starting to hold events, like drag bin- go, a true crime night and a celebration during the Kentucky Derby. We have also begun cooking out on Saturdays. What is the strangest drink request you have gotten? I had somebody order a margarita with gin instead of tequila. They loved it, but to me, that is the most disgusting thing ever! Baker’s specialty drink made with homegrown jalapeños. Charlotte Coyle, known profes- sionally as XYLA, has a mission to bring new sounds to the upper Texas coast and provide a hand up to other woman in the trade, she said. Inspired by artists such as Hozho, a Portuguese music producer who created the genre called Melodark, Coyle is on a path to master the DJ craft. “The type of music I like is not common in the Galveston-Hous- ton area,” Coyle said. “I’ve been trying to create more of what I want to see here.” Working in the predominately male field of DJing comes with a long list of pros and cons, Coyle said. “Sometimes it’s a challenge and sometimes it’s a benefit,” she said. “Some places never had a woman DJ before, so they want a female DJ,” Coyle said. “It’s common for me to be the only female DJ in the lineup.” But women DJs don’t get the same opportunities as their male counter- parts, Coyle said. “In general, we get invited less to play and we’re given less of a platform,” Coyle said. “It’s like with everything else. Sometimes it feels like a club. Some of the people who have been in the field for a long time are men, and they help out their friends, who are also men, to get into the scene.” Coyle has stepped up her game, not only as a DJ, but as an advocate for her female DJ contemporaries. Coyle in 2021 started a show named Nyx: Gorgeous Chaos that focuses on celebrating and uplifting feminine energy, she said. “I’m continuing to give other fe- males in this industry, not just music, but the creative industry, more of a platform,” Coyle said. “I want to support them as much as I can. I want to make this opportu- nity not just for myself, but for others as well.” “It’s common for me to be the only female DJ in the lineup.” CHARLOTTE COYLE COASTMONTHLY.COM | AuguST 2023 103 Charlotte Coyle, known as DJ XYLA, works on a mix of deep house and melodic techno at a friend’s Victorian house in galveston.104 COASTMONTHLY.COM | AuguST 2023 The galveston Juneteenth Coalition presented the ninth annual Juneteenth gala on June 15 at the historic Ashton Villa, which is where the Confederate Army headquartered when the Civil War began in 1861.
