We knew we wanted a male Lab and had found an upcoming litter. We patiently waited for the puppies to be ready and headed to Sunset, Texas, to pick up our new dog. When we arrived, there was a litter of the cutest Labs we had ever seen, all playing and roughhousing together in the front yard. We met the breeders and then inquisitively asked them about the puppy we had decided on; the puppy from the photos with the orange col- lar. They smiled and quickly pointed out our pup, who was lounging in the shade, tucked under a tractor, watch- ing his brothers and sisters. They said he may not look like it at the moment, but he’s got quite the personality, and he’s definitely the alpha of this litter. We had found our new best friend and companion, and by the time we got him home (five-plus hours later), the name Captain had stuck. Years later, we wanted a friend for Captain and met a couple who had a new litter of puppies. Scuba’s parents, Coach and Jersey, were the sweetest golden retrievers and we knew their pups would be great dogs. Scuba was the most loving puppy and quickly grew on Captain. She’s been following him and learning from him ever since. What’s their favorite coastal pas- time? They love playing at the beach, jumping off the dock to retrieve toys and swimming in the Crash Boat Basin. What’s a talent/trick they have? Scuba is a master at opening doors. A “houdoggy” as they may say. It doesn’t matter what style of knob you have, if you don’t want her coming through, you’d better lock it. She has no concept of electricity, air conditioning, or the bills that come with it. Also, they say dogs can’t tell time, but regardless of what time he has breakfast, Captain knows when it’s past 5:30 p.m. and will let you know his dinner must be served. What are their favorite toys? Cap-tain loves anything that floats. Any toy that can give him a reason to jump off the dock and go for a swim. If it’s shaped like a duck, it’s even better. Scuba, on the other hand, loves every toy to its death. They usually only last a few hours at most. She’d be the perfect toy tester. What’s their favorite treat? They love snacking on lots of fruit and, of course, bacon strips! What special way do you spoil/pam- per them? Going for rides. They love riding in the back of the truck with the wind in their face, cruising down the island. If you could compare them to any celebrity or famous person, who would it be? FLASH AND KATE Nicknames: Flash-man and Baby Kate Ages: 9 and 4 Breed: Australian shepherd/Rhodesian ridgeback and great Pyrenees/Lab mix Parents’ names: Justin and Kristie Barlow City: Jamaica Beach How did you meet Flash and Kate? Flash is a rescue dog, and Kate came from Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue. The momma was a surrender dog while pregnant. We watched her birth on Facebook, put in an applica- tion, watched daily for her to learn to crawl, open her eyes, walk, play. We went through a home visit and refer- ences and ultimately picked her up in Waco about four months later. What are their favorite coastal pastimes? Flash loves chasing a ten- nis ball on the beach. Kate loves daily beach walks. How do you and your dogs beat the heat? Beach days or pool days. Flash loves to swim in our pool. Kate loves to jump the waves, but hates to swim and hates the pool. She needs to touch the bottom. What’s a funny memory involving Flash and Kate? The first time Flash ever got in the pool was a complete accident. The tennis ball bounced in and he went in after it. He spread all four legs in the air, landed and immediately did a panic swim — body straight up, about halfway out of the water and major hard paddling. He looked like a duck. The first family Christmas meeting my tiny Granny, Kate wanted to sit in her lap, and Kate weighs more than my Granny does. Granny just loves her. What’s a talent/trick they have? Flash will dive after a tennis ball and even dive under the water. It’s pretty fun to watch. Kate gives hugs. She will very gently hop up and put her paws on your shoulder, forehead to forehead. We say she’s looking into your soul. Is there a trick they have taught you? Flash has taught me how to throw a Frisbee better. Kate has taught me the proper way for her to load up on the golf cart — jump up in the seat, turn around, front paws on the floor, hiney on the seat, head out the front window and lean on your human as much as you can. Of course, she has a seatbelt hooked to her harness. What are their favorite toys? Flash’s favorite toy is a tennis ball. Kate’s is a deer antler. She doesn’t real- ly play with toys. She wants whatever her brother has. What’s their favorite treat? Pup 36 COASTMONTHLY.COM | AuguST 2023 FEATURE Jamaica Beach residents Kristie and Justin Barlow love spending time poolside with their high- energy pups, Kate and Flash. Flash comes running when he hears the can shake on Sunday morn- ing. Kate loves them, too. What special way do you spoil/ pamper them? Flash has a bed in every room. He gets breakfast and bedtime bones. The pups get chicken nuggets and small vanilla cupcakes on their birthdays and gotcha days. If you could compare them to any celebrity or famous person, who would it be? Flash is like Barney Fife. He is a little bit nervous, startles easily, shakes a little and is a little socially awkward, but also very sensitive. He gets his feelings hurt easily. And Kate, um, I’ll have to think about that a bit more.
