JeNNIFer reYNOLDS102 COASTMONTHLY.COM | NOveMber 2023 BIRD’S EYE VIEW SNOWY EGRET EGRETTA THULA story and illustration by CHRISTINA EBERT MATTISON The fact that today, amid the wetlands of the Texas Gulf Coast, one readily can spot a snowy egret is owed to the com- passionate and forward-thinking actions of two 19th-century boston socialites. The wispy, angelic feathers of snowy egrets were, quite literally, worth more than gold during the heyday of American plume hunting, and primarily ended up adorn- ing women’s hats. The species was hunted nearly to extinction until two concerned women — Harriet Hemenway and her cousin Minna Hall — staged a boycott and convinced about 900 of their peers to come along for the ride. Thanks to these two pioneering women, we still can enjoy the presence of these beautiful little herons in our lives. FUN FACT: The snowy egret’s signature bright feet change from a greenish-yellow during the non-breeding season to a reddish-orange tone when breeding.
