The crowd of 80 enjoyed a sumptuous charcuterie spread laid out by the island hotel with support from general manager Leon Garrison. The rev. Brian Moore, of Moody Methodist Church, reinforced a mission mindset through the invocation. One year ago, Catholic Charities expanded its ability to serve island families in need by enlarging its food pantry at the Galveston Island Community Center, set up like a grocery store to allow clients to maintain their dignity while selecting items they want to take home. In addition, clients may take classes at the Isle Market to learn how to prepare nutritious foods for a healthy lifestyle. Financial assistance also is available. Catholic Charities continues to offer drive-through food distribution in partnership with the Galveston County Food Bank, held monthly with help from a corps of volunteers. They sound exactly like a cheap dog toy…. Now imagine a dozen tiny birds all making that same squeezy sound as they bound about above your head. Being the sophisticated birder that I am, [when I hear that] I immediately burst out laughing.” FuN FACT: Brown-headed nuthatches employ scraps of bark as tools. Sometimes carrying the same piece from tree to tree, they use it to pry away other pieces in search of insects.
