Taking ad- vantage of a good “contrary wind” is exactly what white-tailed kites do to hunt, hovering some 80 feet above the ground while scanning for small mammalian prey below. Kites are experts at using air flows around their wings to stay aloft, and will rapidly plunge talons-first to the ground once prey is spotted. Texas is fortunate to serve as a habitat for this species because they’re generally found in a limited range that includes California and the Texas Gulf Coast. Look for these small raptors in grasslands, marshes, pastures and agricultural fields. FUN FACT: At the edges of their territories, white-tailed kites sometimes engage in aerial combat called “grappling,” locking talons mid-air to assert dominance.
