Although she was a licensed physician in Caracas, she had to be re-certified in the United States. In 2009, after completing a three-year residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch, she opened her own practice.Mejia has always been up for a challenge. She once spent 18 days on the Amazon River. There, she slept in a hammock and ate fried caiman meat (resembles an alligator) with hot sauce made from ants.“I’m scientific, but intuitive,” said Mejia, who is seeking certification to treat menopause.“I like helping people,” she said. Her style is elegant, but simple. She doesn’t like to wear much makeup or a lot of jewelry and prefers understated colors.“Wearing red lipstick is new for me, but I’m trying to change and wear more cheerful colors,” she said. Here are a few of her favorite things:Dr. Maria Mejia1. Books: “i love to read. Two of these i’ve finished and i’m about to start on ‘The Color of Success,’ given to me by the author, who explained how color reflects our mood and that we wear certain colors that make us feel safe and secure. i’m working on that.”2. Street view in Cumaná in Venuezuela: “This painting is so dear to me. it is the street my grandmother, Narcisa, lived on in Cumaná when i was growing up. i would ride my bike 10 miles to see her, almost every day.”3. Allure Sensuelle by Chanel: “i don’t like strong scents. This one is mild and stays with me all day.”4. Bongo Boats: “These are models of Venezuelan fishing boats, called bongo boats. i love the sea and spent many enjoyable hours boating and fishing in the Gulf of Cariaco.”5. Zoot triathlon suit: “i competed in three triathlons last year. This is my multipurpose suit that will take me through swimming, biking and running without having to change.”6. Santa Teresa Rum: “We’re known for our rum in Venezuela. This one is deli-cate and sophisticated with its smooth texture, golden amber color and a fragrant scent of oranges.” 7. Gold Necklace: “This is my baptismal necklace. The eye was given to me by a friend’s mother for protection. Both are special to me.”8. Fresh flowers: “i always have fresh flowers in my home. They represent energy, nature, life and happiness.” 13245678 COASTMONTHLY.COM / April 2016 97For Reservations, Call 1-800-445-00905222 Seawall Boulevard • Galveston Island, Texas 77551800.445.0090 • 409.744.1500 • sanluisresort.com/thesanluisresort • /thesanluisgalv • /thesanluisresortYour Search Starts HereContact me today to begin your personalized home search!Donna Corbett NewdingCo-Owner/Realtor822 6TH STREET NORTH, TEXAS CITY TX. 77590409 939-8095e-mail: donna@donnanewding.comweb site: www.donnanewding.com FIVE STAR REALTOR TEXAS MONTHLY MAGAZINE 2011-12-13-14-15FarleyAppliance Your Appliance SolutionVisit our showroom today! 814 W.
