Although not specifically mentioned, many believe Dickinson most certainly is referring to the mourning dove in this poem. Often used as a symbol of peace and hope, many cultures consider mourning dove sightings as visitations from deceased loved ones. This busy little ground forager is a ubiquitous part of many North American landscapes, and usually can be spotted in grassy areas packing seeds into its crop — a food storage pouch in the frontal neck — for future digestion. They are most commonly recognized by the bittersweet cooing call that emanates from a male dove attempting to attract a mate. FUN FACT: Mourning doves consume up to 20 percent of their body weight in seeds every day.
