I dare you, as they mow the water, scooping up tiny fish with their preposterous bills, to not at least momentarily skip out of self.” – David Gessner, an award-winning nature writer Gessner is poetically referring to the black skimmer, a tern-like seabird best known for its in-flight fish foraging technique. The black skimmer is a tactile hunter, running its large lower mandible through water until it comes into contact with a fish, at which point it snaps its bill shut. because their scavenging method relies less on sight and more on touch, black skimmers also are capable of hunting at night. FUN FACT: Unique to the black skimmer is its vertically oriented pupil, which lessens the glare from water and sand. y e a r s SERVING GALVESTON COUNTY EST. 1892 CALL (409) 740-1251 VISIT WWW.GIA-TX.COM HOME | AUTO | BENEFITS FLOOD | WIND | COMMERCIAL INSURANCE FREE ESTIMATE CALL TODAY! Joey Quiroga photo- graphed One-eyed Jack around the 53rd Street waterfront area. “He’s a very tough tomboy, and yes, he really has one eye,” Quiroga said. “I followed him around and he led me to an area of fish bone treasures.” Quiroga thinks One-eyed Jack is one of the scariest cats he has ever seen, he said. “And I am a cat lover,” he said. “He was worthy of me to create an art piece of him as he sat on a tire. I was lucky to catch him still for a brief moment. Some say One-eyed Jack is the ghost cat of a famous notorious island pirate.” I’LL Help you find the Perfect Home!
