You are likely to spot a cedar waxwing — or a flock of them — plucking and downing berries whole, which is no problem for these silky smooth woodland creatures because they’re one of the rare fruit-consuming bird species that can digest seeds without having to regurgitate them. FuN FACT: The red spots on some cedar waxwings’ secondary feathers consist of a pigment called astaxanthin. The purpose of these spots is uncertain, but one theory posits they play a role in attracting mates. COASTMONTHLY.COM | JANuArY 2023 83 market specials! The power lines offer a convenient place for birds to perch, especially if there isn’t tall vegetation or trees nearby. Power lines in different parts of the world have helped some bird species expand their ranges of flight into desert and prairie areas where little to no vegetation is found.
