The male summer tanager, although a bright vermilion beauty, can often be difficult to spot because he favors hanging out in forest canopies surrounded by foliage. Given that a summer tanager’s favorite food is a bee or wasp plucked straight from the air, the best place to spot one might be while it’s on the wing in hot pursuit of its next meal. How, then, does the summer tanager avoid being stung by its insect prey? The bird expertly removes the stingers by raking the bug against tree bark before consumption. FuN FACT: The summer tanager is the only bird with completely red plumage in North America. COASTMONTHLY.COM | JuNe 2023 103 An agent with the vision to turn your dream into reality. By 1982, the foundation and volunteers completed res- toration and transformed the rare, historic vessel into a floating museum that would actively sail. Today, the 1877 tall ship elissa at Pier 22 is one of only three ships of her kind in the world to still actively sail and each year welcomes more than 40,000 visitors, according to the foundation. She also serves as the official Tall Ship of Texas. COASTMONTHLY.COM | JuNe 2023 105 VOTEDBEST SEAFOOD2023 TRYOURAWARD WINNINGDISHTODAY!
