With a distinctive bright orange bill and crisp black, brown and white plumage, the American oystercatcher is easy to spot as it wades in intertidal zones, seeking out its favorite bivalve mollusks. Upon finding a partially open shell, the oys- tercatcher stabs its bill inside and severs the muscle that closes the shell so it can safely remove the oyster. Alternatively, it might carry the oyster to a dry place and use its bill to smash the shell to access the muscle. FUN FACT: With oyster hunting comes great risk — sometimes a shellfish vengefully clamps onto an oystercatcher’s bill and holds the bird hostage until high tide. Once the refracted light enters the raindrop, it’s reflected off the back and then refracted again as it exits and travels to our eyes.” photographer and artist Joey Quiroga captured this rainbow July 5 over the 61st Street Fishing pier in Galveston.
