For example, they have been dubbed “golden swamp warblers” and “swamp canaries,” among others. Their distinctive sunshine-yellow plumage and beady black eyes make them easy to spot in their favored environment — forested wetlands — as they hop among low-lying branches and fallen trees in search of food. unfortu- nately, their numbers are diminishing on account of habitat loss. FuN FACT: In 1948, American government official Alger Hiss was on trial for perjury. The case involved linking Hiss to Whittaker Chambers, a member of the u.S. Communist Party. Apparently both the men liked bird-watching, and Cham- bers described that Hiss had once spotted a prothonotary warbler. Hiss’ later mention of this sighting linked the men and Hiss eventually was convicted.
